Sleep Problems Common in Children with ADHD

Sleep problems are a common issue for children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), which can lead to school problems for the children and even work issues for their parents.

Children who faced sleep problems had poorer quality of life as compared to those children without any problem sleeping. Children with sleep problems will affect their behavior, memory, attention and concentration. They need to have enough sleep else they may wake up cranky, hyperactive and even un-refreshed.

Recommended hours of sleep at night by researcher are as follow:

* 3 – 5 years old required 12 hours of sleep with a daytime nap
* from 5 years old and above will need 10 – 11 hours of sleep

Children exhibit too little thinking activity (Beta brainwave) and too much dreaming activity (Theta brainwave) which, keeps them from falling asleep. In essence, the child is combating the high
thinking activity and keeping themselves aroused by increasing their Dreaming activity. Children can use neurofeedback to reduce theta waves and increase beta waves, increasing their attentiveness Joel Lubar, Ph.D., a psychologist at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, who originated neurofeedback treatment for ADHD in the 1970s, says neurofeedback can produce some of the same brain wave changes as drugs used to treat the disorder.

It is important that parents try to treat their children who have ADHD and sleep disorders even though it is very difficult as treating sleep disorder may reduce or eliminate ADHD symptoms. Once treated, children's behavior may improve and decrease their irritability. They will be more alert and attentive during the day and their life will be more smooth and improve their relationships, especially with the family. Life can be improve dramatically for the child as well as the entire family members.
